WelcomeThe literary value of Punjabi as written in the Guru Granth Sahib is of great importance. Punjabi, is spoken in the Punjab, the historic region now divided between India and Pakistan. Millions of people abroad speak Punjabi. The Punjabi language is closely associated with the Sikh religion. Its alphabet, known as Gurmukhi, was the vehicle for recording the teachings of the Sikh Gurus. It was invented by Guru Angad Dev ji in the 16th century. Gurmukhi means "proceeding from the mouth of the Guru." Gurmukhi is a simplified script that contains 10 vowels and 40 consonants. The script is written just as you would speak the language ,thus making it easier to read and write. The Gurmukhi school being run at the Gurudwara Sahib premises is an excellent effort to teach Gurmukhi to the next generation, so that Guru Granth Sahib can be read in its original form.We feel it is important to learn Punjabi because Punjabi is the mother language of the Punjabis as well as the language of the Sikh Religion. Through knowing Punjabi, we gain an understanding of the Sikh cultural and spiritual heritage and develop a strong tie with the Punjab, the birthplace of Sikhism. But more importantly, the Guru Granth Sahib Ji is written in Gurmukhi and it is only through knowing and understanding Punjabi that a Sikh can fully participate in the worship of the Guru Granth Sahib Ji in the Sangat. The Punjabi school was opened in May 2005 and since then over 300 children have been taught Punjabi in this school. Currently there are children attending the school, aged from 5 to 25 years.Punjabi is taught from beginners up to G.C.S.E. AS and A levels. The school uses Barclay School examination centre of AQA for sitting the examinations.Children are taught to speak, read and write in Punjabi. The starting age is 5 years and most children progress to take GCSE Punjabi with an excellent success rate.Although the class runs for two hours we also introduce Sikh history and ensure that the children are aware of events on the Sikh calendar. Our aim is to teach and promote Gurmukhi & Sikh History to children, so that they can understand and be proud to live by the Sikh Principles.Bring your children to the Punjabi class between 10:30am - 12noon on Sundays
